I live in Bandon on the southern Oregon coast and I've been riding for a long, long time, years, decades. We won't go there kiddies but believe me, it's been awhile. During that time I've done most of my riding on the road with occasional off-road forays, most of which were intentional. Some weren't. Until just a couple of years ago I'd never ridden a hack - that's sidecar to those who aren't familiar with the lingo. I figure riding a hack up Alaska's infamous Haul road all the way to Deadhorse should top off my torture tank for quite awhile.

About Mac

Mac hails from Robins, Iowa and has been riding bikes longer than most people have been around. He managed to torture his old BMW past the 100,000 mile mark and presently rides a Yamaha FJR. His newest ride, a 2008 Ural Patrol is waiting on the dealer's highest shelf until the flood waters recede after which they'll assemble it and turn it over to him. The fact that he's heading to Alaska for his first journey on a new rig should tell you all you need to know about him...

Aug 04, 2014 Keeping it in the family

Tomorrow's Aug 4th, 2014 and after 11 years of ownership I'll be saying goodbye to my Aprilia Pegaso 650 Cube.
2008 Alaska here I come! 
Yesterday was spent assisting my friend Jerry Smith in the removal or as he said it "the separation" of the Sputnik sidecar that's been joined to the Pegaso for nearly the entire time. The "operation" was a success and they're no longer a single entity, there will never be another ride on them as a united pair. How sad that seems.

2014 Bye bye baby! Gonna miss you...

The journey to Alaska with Mac was and continues to be among the highlights of my rides and I've nothing but the fondest of memories of it. Sadly after returning home I became aware of a persistent oil leak in the Pegaso's upper end, or so it seemed. This issue kept the rig out of play and after two attempts to correct the problem I moved it to the back burner to be looked at when time allowed.

Time passed and eventually through a series of purchases and trades I came into possession of 1992 BMW R100GS "Bumblebee" outfitted with an older Ural sidecar. It's a well sorted rig and I chose it for a successful summer tour through several states in the southwest. It proved to be reliable, especially easy to ride and I've decided to keep it as my sidecar outfit.

All of this leads me to tomorrow when the Pegaso goes to its new home in Sandy, OR. My youngest son Brian will be the new owner and has already made arrangements to have the engine gone through and hopefully that will spell the end of the oil leak. Brian's a very experienced rider and has owned a slew of bikes over the years so I'm happy he's decided to take the Pegaso under his wing.

So what about the Sputnik?  Well currently it's living in the barn next to a first generation KLR that I just happen to have a sidecar mounting kit for...
So what's next boss? You ain't gonna leave me in this barn are you?
